Kiley gets BOB and her Major !!

Well it was quite the weekend. On Sat Kiley wasn't comfortable with the gentleman handling her and wasn't comfortable in the ring. Franco was distracted by Kiley arriving. He had not seen her in 24 hours. He was good but room for improvement.

Today, Sunday, he did much better & I thought he had it till I watched Kiley put on her " Oh Yea" face & strut her stuff. She went Best of Breed over Franco and a Special.

To me it was just making up for her performance the day before..LOL.
At group well, we had a hic up & didn't make it, but I am very happy with the effort from both dogs. This was only Franco's second set of shows & Kiley's 4th.

Thank you to Judge, Dr. Agnes Ganami-Kertes of Tel-Aviv Israel, for her kind words about Kiley and giving her Best of Breed today.

Big THANKS to Darren McKinnon for his work with Franco and to Marjorie Ross for handling Kiley today. Great job guys !

Crested Nationals fast approaching...

We're down to the last few weeks before Nationals in Abbottsford, BC. Franco will be shown with a handler in his next show to see how he behaves. Then after that we're off. I'm not sure what he'll do as he can be great one moment & nervous the next. Last show the Coton behind us ran up on him & scared him & so made him worry about what was going on behind him, he started to sit rather than stand after that.

Anyway hopefully he will overcome this fright & be the old Franco again.
Wish us luck !

About us

Seafoam Cresteds, so that we may carry on the kennel name my parents started in 1985. We are excited about continuing this kennel tradition.

We are located in beautiful Nova Scotia. From our front door to the ocean is about a 10 minute drive. This blog is our 'home' on the web for now. I find it easier to add quick updates & pics. I have to admit our cresteds are spoiled rotten. We do not have kennels, our dogs sleep in our beds and have the run of the house. They enjoy following me about as I go from room to room. They are great foot warmers but they are also show dogs.
I'm a second generation dog show nut and I've been involved with dogs since 1983 when my parents bought their first show Collie. They went on to buy their show dogs from one of the top collie kennels at the time Nationview. With a blue merle named Kerrie and a tri called Tega, they traveled around the Maritimes and to ON to shows for many years. Eventually they moved on to Beardies and then attended Crufts and came home with their name on the waiting list for a pup from a PBGV kennel they saw while there. Years later they are still owned by two wonderful PBGV's and a Tibetan Terrier.

We are a registered member in good standing of the Canadian Kennel Club and belong to the Chinese Crested Club of Canada.

For the dogs safety, we do not accept 'drop ins' , please make an appointment.

Health testing done annually.
Eventually we may have a litter but are happy just to show and enjoy the breed for now.

About the Chinese Crested

Chinese Crested Temperament

The Chinese Crested is a small dog with plenty of love and affection to give, and a real love of human company. The Chinese Crested is a dog that is for those with plenty of time to commit and dedicate to their pet, as breed does not like to be neglected. The Chinese Crested has plenty of spirit and is cheerful, playful, and lively. He is also alert, intelligent, and inquisitive, and is quick to learn, although he can be very independent and strong willed. The Chinese Crested loves to climb, play, and perform tricks, and he is very fond of spending time with his owners to the point where he has become known by some as a 'velcro dog'.

The Chinese Crested gets on well with older, considerate children that will be gentle with him, and he also gets along with other pets, although he can sometimes get a little jealous. When it comes to strangers he can be a little reserved and timid. The gentle and bright nature of the Chinese Crested makes him well suited to inexperienced dog owners as well as more experienced owners. It is important that the Chinese Crested is socialized early on. With effective training and early socialization the Chinese Crested can make a great little companion dog and pet.

Chinese Crested Appearance

A little dog, the Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, which include the hairless variety and the powder puff variety. The hairless variety, as the name suggests, has no hair on the body and a crest of silky hair around the head and on the feet and tail, giving it a very elegant and unusual look. The hairless variety is a good choice for those that suffer from allergies. The powder puff variety has long, silky hair all over, which is straight on the outside and soft and silky on the undercoat. The Chinese Crested has an alert and inquisitive expression, and is a very elegant and graceful dog. The weight of the Chinese Crested is around 10-15 pounds, and the height is 11-15 inches.

Chinese Crested Grooming

Grooming will depend on whether you have the hairless or powder puff variety. The hairless simply needs to have a small amount of oil or lotion massaged into the skin to keep it in good condition. The powder puff variety will need to be brushed and combed once or twice a week.

Some Chinese crested dogs are allergic to wool and lanolin.

General Appearance

A small, active and graceful dog; medium to fine boned, smooth hairless body, with hair on feet, head and tail only or covered with soft veil of hair.

Characteristics

Two distinct types of this breed; Deer type, racy and fine boned, and Cobby type, heavier in body and bone.

Temperament

Happy, never vicious.

Head and Skull

Head
Slightly rounded and elongated skull. Cheeks cleanly chiselled, lean and flat, tapering into muzzle. Stop slightly pronounced but not extreme. Head smooth, without excess wrinkles. Distance from base of skull to stop equal to distance from stop to tip of nose. Muzzle tapering slightly but never pointed, lean without flews. Nose a prominent feature, narrow in keeping with muzzle. Any colour nose acceptable. Head presenting graceful appearance, with alert expression. Lips tight and thin; ideally, crest beginning at stop tapering off down neck. Crest itself may flow to any length, a long and flowing crest preferred, but sparse acceptable.
Eyes: So dark as to appear black. Little or no white showing. Medium size. Set wide apart.
Ears: Set low; highest point of base of ear level with outside corner of eye. Large and erect, with or without fringe, except in Powder Puffs where drop ears are permissible.
Mouth: In both varieties: lips are tight with a regular scissor bite, i.e. the upper teeth closely overlapping to the lower teeth and set square to the jaws is preferred, a level bite is acceptable. An undershot bite is considered a fault. In the hairless variety irregular shaped canines, or missing canines, incisors, premolars or molars is to be expected and not to be penalized.
In the Powderpuff variety, lack of full dentition is considered a fault.

Neck

Lean, free from throatiness, long and sloping gracefully into strong shoulders. When moving, carried high and slightly arched.

Forequarters

Shoulders clean, narrow and well laid back. Legs long and slender, set well under body. Elbows held close to body. Pasterns fine, strong, nearly vertical. Toes turned in nor out.

Body

Medium to long. Supple. Chest rather broad and deep, not barrelribbed. Breast bone not prominent. Brisket extending to elbows; moderate tuckup.

Hindquarters

Rump well-rounded and muscular, loins taut, stifles firm and long, sweeping smoothly into the well let-down hock. Angulation of the rear limb must be such as to produce a level back. Hind-legs set wide apart.

Feet

Extreme hare foot, narrow and very long, with unique elongation of small bones between joints, especially in forefeet, which almost appear to possess an extra joint. Nails any colour, moderately long. Socks ideally confined to toes, but not extending above top of pastern. Feet turning neither in nor out.

Tail

Set high, carried up or out when in motion. Long and tapering, fairly straight, not curled or twisted to either side, falling naturally when at rest. Plume long and flowing, confined to lower thirds of tail. Sparse plume acceptable.

Gait/Movement

Long, flowing and elegant with good reach and plenty of drive.

Coat

No large patches of hair anywhere on body. Skin fine grained. Smooth warm to the touch. In Powder Puffs coat consists of an undercoat with soft veil of long hair, well coated feature.

Colour

Any colour or combination of colours.

Size

Ideal height in dogs: 28-33cm (11-13 ins) at withers. Bitches: 23-30cm (9-12 ins) at withers. Weight varies considerably, but should not be over 5 1/2 kgs (12 lbs).

Faults

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.

Note

Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
