Polls

OK somewhere else on the WWW we are having a discussion regarding crested health issues, particularly eyes. There seems to be a divide between those who feel it is OK to breed a dog with known eye issues and those who don't. Known is the key word here, I'm not referring to breedings that took place before testing was available. By eye issues I mean PRA
Also I realize testing does not guarantee a clear dog as stated on their webpage , but it sure helps me eliminate dogs with known problems from my lines.
To me it is a none issue, as when I breed it will only be a tested normal/clear to a tested normal/clear. I don't feel that it is something I care to risk passing on in my dogs. But others feel different and I understand that , my concern is with making people aware of the issue & testing ALL pups , not just those for show/breeding.

Having said that I'd like your thoughts, so I created a poll to see what you think. It is to the right of the page.

Christmas

Well we've had our first snowfall & the guys have been blazing trails & zooming around in the snow. They really become just like children & race & play, all the time smiling as they go.
Soon Santa will be here & our non-furry son will be home from Uni. for Xmas. It will be good to have a little activity in the house again.

Franco goes to Nationals

Best in Sweeps at Regionals with Judge Vaughn Franske Shown by Janice Brind

Well we are home safe & sound with a few extra goodies & ribbons too. Franco was an angel and considering this was only his second weekend at shows he did great. Also he didn't know Janice, who handled him in Regionals to Best in Sweeps and he won his class. YAY !! lol.

At Nationals I took him in the ring & he went 4th in his sweeps class and then in the regular classes, he won his class again. Woo Hoo !!

We took Sat off. and then on Sunday at the all breed he went Reserve Winners and got Best Puppy and came completely out of his shell and put forth a great effort in the ring.
He are a couple of videos from the weekend:
Reserve-

Regional Sweeps Win

In for Puppy in Group-
didn't win but showed nicely.

Franco received many great comments from other crested people & judges alike.
Dr. Goran Bodegard ( Sweden) stopped Janice on her way out of the ring to say that he adored Franco's head and coloring. Later at pics he started talking again & told her he didn't know how his breeder could have let him go, that he will be a contender in the future when he matures !!!

We are in BC !!

Franco & I are in BC ! We arrived yesterday after a long flight. Franco was a great boy & traveled as carry on with no problems.

He has now made friends with 3 bouvier's, a malamute, and is working on becoming friends with 2 cresteds.

We will be working on our show 'presence' the next couple of days so hopefully he feels comfortable at the show. We'll see.
Will take some pics later.

Gulls n Berries

I took a lovely 5 hours drive today along the Fundy Shore here in Nova Scotia. It was a bit of 'stress relief' before my over 5000KM flight to the Nationals in BC next week.
I stopped along the way for a couple of shots of the blueberry fields, gulls and as the tide was going out the mud flats.

Hope you enjoy!

Kiley gets BOB and her Major !!

Well it was quite the weekend. On Sat Kiley wasn't comfortable with the gentleman handling her and wasn't comfortable in the ring. Franco was distracted by Kiley arriving. He had not seen her in 24 hours. He was good but room for improvement.

Today, Sunday, he did much better & I thought he had it till I watched Kiley put on her " Oh Yea" face & strut her stuff. She went Best of Breed over Franco and a Special.

To me it was just making up for her performance the day before..LOL.
At group well, we had a hic up & didn't make it, but I am very happy with the effort from both dogs. This was only Franco's second set of shows & Kiley's 4th.

Thank you to Judge, Dr. Agnes Ganami-Kertes of Tel-Aviv Israel, for her kind words about Kiley and giving her Best of Breed today.

Big THANKS to Darren McKinnon for his work with Franco and to Marjorie Ross for handling Kiley today. Great job guys !

Crested Nationals fast approaching...

We're down to the last few weeks before Nationals in Abbottsford, BC. Franco will be shown with a handler in his next show to see how he behaves. Then after that we're off. I'm not sure what he'll do as he can be great one moment & nervous the next. Last show the Coton behind us ran up on him & scared him & so made him worry about what was going on behind him, he started to sit rather than stand after that.

Anyway hopefully he will overcome this fright & be the old Franco again.
Wish us luck !
Here is one of Kiley exploring the yard too.

Small dog boarding vs pet sitting

We've been tossing this idea around for years now & keep coming back to it. I'd like to operate a small dog boarding facility but with a more homey touch. Have separate little condos for the dogs with a feeling more like home. I've looked at many kennels over the years & have a vision of what I'd like in mind. Taking into consideration the practicality & cleaning requirements I still think we can create a more comfortable place for them to stay than most I've seen.

The pic above is similar to my idea for the buildings , we'd add a large fenced play area to each building which would also be inside our fenced property.

VS

A bonded pet sit service where I would visit the home of the animal once/twice or three times a day depending on owners preference and spend time with the pet, walk/play/feed etc.

Which would you prefer??

Truro show

Well just did our first show of 2009, nerves all around..lol.
APatchEE took Best of Breed on Sat and Best of Opposite on Sun.

After Sunday's showing I got the chance to sit & talk with World Judge, Flora MacKenzie, for over an hour. She & my mom are great friends and they spent most of the afternoon huddled like two peas in a pod. Flora was kind enough to give me a couple of pointers on myself, at my end of the lead & on A PatchEE. It was great to be able to ask questions and get her feedback. Having judged all breeds, all round the world, the past 50 years she is a fountain of knowledge.

The little girl CC from the show really reminds me of Kiley but with more furnishings, a more hairy HL. It will be interesting to see how things go when Kiley, Joker & Franco all hit the ring this summer.

Hi to BT

Recently on BT, Jayson was talking about ugly dogs and of course cresteds came up. Everyone thinks of poor Sam who won the ugliest dog contest many times before he passed away. Poor Sam was a rescue who had years of untreated health issues which added to his 'look'.

Jayson asked about chinese cresteds in the Maritimes, so I sent him off a link to our site. He replied this morning saying he'd visited the site and even admitted the dogs are 'pretty'.
YAY!

He asked if I 'd mind if they 'had some fun with it"...not at all Jayson...as long as you don't..lol

About us

Seafoam Cresteds, so that we may carry on the kennel name my parents started in 1985. We are excited about continuing this kennel tradition.

We are located in beautiful Nova Scotia. From our front door to the ocean is about a 10 minute drive. This blog is our 'home' on the web for now. I find it easier to add quick updates & pics. I have to admit our cresteds are spoiled rotten. We do not have kennels, our dogs sleep in our beds and have the run of the house. They enjoy following me about as I go from room to room. They are great foot warmers but they are also show dogs.

I'm a second generation dog show nut and I've been involved with dogs since 1983 when my parents bought their first show Collie. They went on to buy their show dogs from one of the top collie kennels at the time Nationview. With a blue merle named Kerrie and a tri called Tega, they traveled around the Maritimes and to ON to shows for many years. Eventually they moved on to Beardies and then attended Crufts and came home with their name on the waiting list for a pup from a PBGV kennel they saw while there. Years later they are still owned by two wonderful PBGV's and a Tibetan Terrier.

We are a registered member in good standing of the Canadian Kennel Club and belong to the Chinese Crested Club of Canada.

For the dogs safety, we do not accept 'drop ins' , please make an appointment.

Health testing done annually.
Eventually we may have a litter but are happy just to show and enjoy the breed for now.
Please feel free to leave us a comment or two...it lets me know I'm not typing away to myself.

Any questions just send us an
email

About the Chinese Crested

Chinese Crested Temperament

The Chinese Crested is a small dog with plenty of love and affection to give, and a real love of human company. The Chinese Crested is a dog that is for those with plenty of time to commit and dedicate to their pet, as breed does not like to be neglected. The Chinese Crested has plenty of spirit and is cheerful, playful, and lively. He is also alert, intelligent, and inquisitive, and is quick to learn, although he can be very independent and strong willed. The Chinese Crested loves to climb, play, and perform tricks, and he is very fond of spending time with his owners to the point where he has become known by some as a 'velcro dog'.

The Chinese Crested gets on well with older, considerate children that will be gentle with him, and he also gets along with other pets, although he can sometimes get a little jealous. When it comes to strangers he can be a little reserved and timid. The gentle and bright nature of the Chinese Crested makes him well suited to inexperienced dog owners as well as more experienced owners. It is important that the Chinese Crested is socialized early on. With effective training and early socialization the Chinese Crested can make a great little companion dog and pet.

Chinese Crested Appearance

A little dog, the Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, which include the hairless variety and the powder puff variety. The hairless variety, as the name suggests, has no hair on the body and a crest of silky hair around the head and on the feet and tail, giving it a very elegant and unusual look. The hairless variety is a good choice for those that suffer from allergies. The powder puff variety has long, silky hair all over, which is straight on the outside and soft and silky on the undercoat. The Chinese Crested has an alert and inquisitive expression, and is a very elegant and graceful dog. The weight of the Chinese Crested is around 10-15 pounds, and the height is 11-15 inches.

Chinese Crested Grooming

Grooming will depend on whether you have the hairless or powder puff variety. The hairless simply needs to have a small amount of oil or lotion massaged into the skin to keep it in good condition. The powder puff variety will need to be brushed and combed once or twice a week.

Some Chinese crested dogs are allergic to wool and lanolin.
